Ishmael ~ እስማኤል: “Ishmael” means whom God hears / SBD, (ዘፍ 16፡11)

The root words ‘Ishmael’ are ‘Sema’ (ሰማ) and ‘El’ (ኤል) ፥ the meaning is ‘the almighty lord heared’/ Ibid.

Abraham's eldest son, by Hagar, “And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the Lord hath heard thy affliction.” (Gen 16:15; 17:23)

The other person with the same name: “The son of Nethaniah, "of the seed royal" (Jer 40:8, 15); He plotted against Gedaliah, and treacherously put him and others to death. He carried off many captives, "and departed to go over to the Ammonites."

እስማኤል ~Ishmael: ሰማ ኤል፣ አምላክ ሰማ፣ ፀሎትን ተቀበለ ማለት ነው። [ተዛማጅ ስም- ይስማኤል፣ ሳሙኤል]

‘ሰማ’ እና ‘ኤል’ ከሚሉ ቃላት የተመሠረተ ስም ነው።

[ትርጉሙ “እግዚብሔር ይሰማል” ማለት ነው / መቅቃ]

በዚህ ስም የሚታወቁ ስድስት ሰዎች አሉ።

1.                  የአብርሃም ልጅ፣ ከአጋር የተወለደው፥ “የእግዚአብሔር መልአክም አላት፦ እነሆ አንቺ ፀንሰሻል፥ ወንድ ልጅንም ትወልጃለሽ ስሙንም እስማኤል ብለሽ ትጠሪዋለሽ፥ እግዚአብሔር መቸገርሽን ሰምቶአልና።” (ዘፍ16፡11) ፣ “...አብራምም አጋር የወለደችለትን የልጁን ስም እስማኤል ብሎ ጠራው፥” (ዘፍ 16:3 ፣ 21:5)

2.                  የኤሴል ልጅ፥ (1 ዜና 8:38)

3.                  የናታንያ ልጅ፥ (ዘፍ 40:8 ፣ 15)፣ (ኤር 40:8)

·                     ከይሁዳ ወገን የሆነ፥ የዝባድያ አባት፥ ይስማኤል ፥ (2 ዜና 19:11)

·                     ከይሁዳ ወገን የሆነ፣ ዮዳሄን ወደ ዙፋን ለማድረስ የተባበረ፣ የይሆሐናንን ልጅ፥ ይስማኤልን፥ (2 ዜና 23:1)

·                     በዕዝራ ዘመን እንግዳ ሚስቶቻቸውን እንዲፈቱ ከተደረጉ፣ ካህኑ፥ ይስማኤል ፥ ይስማኤል፥ (ዕዝ 10:22)
