The name ‘Zechariah’ is derived from ‘Zekari’ (ዘካሪ) and ‘Yah’ (ያህ) ፥ the meaning is ‘remember of Jehovah’ / Ibid.

A prophet of Judah, the eleventh of the twelve minor prophets; Like Ezekiel, he was of priestly extraction. He describes himself, “Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of ....” (Zac 1:1)

Other people with the same name are: Son of Meshelemiah or Shelemiah a Korhite, and keeper of the north gate of the tabernacle of the congregation (1 Chr 9:21); One of the sons of Jehiel (1 Chr 9:37); A Levite of the second order in the temple band as arranged by David, appointed to play "with psalteries on Alamoth." (1 Chr 15:18, 20); One of the princes of Judah in the reign of Jehoshaphat (2 Chr 17:7); Son of the high priest Jehoiada, in the reign of Joash king of Judah (2 Chr 24:20) and therefore the king's cousin. After the death of Jehoiada, Zechariah probably succeeded to his office, and in attempting to check the reaction in favor of idolatry which immediately followed he fell a victim to a conspiracy formed against him by the king, and was stoned in the court of the temple. He is probably the same as the "Zacharias son of Barachias" who was slain between the temple and the altar (Mat 23:35); A Kohathite Levite in the reign of Josiah (2 Chr 34:12); The leader of the sons of Pharosh who returned with Ezra. (Ezr 8:3); Son of Behai. One of the chiefs of the people whom Ezra summoned in council at the river Ahava. ዘካርያስ ~Zachariah, Zacharias, Zechariah: ዘካሪ ያህ፣ ዝክረ ህያው፣ ዝክረ ዋስ፣ የጌታ ዝክር፣ የአምላክ መታሰቢያ፣ የጻድቅ ማስታዎሻ ማለት ነው። [ተዛማጅ ስሞች:- ዘኩር፣ ዘካይ፣ ዘኬዎስ፣ ዛኩር]

‘ዘከረ’ እና ‘ያህ፣ ዋስ’(ያህዌ ፣ ህያው) ከሚሉ ቃላት የተመሠረተ ስም ነው።

I.                        ዘካርያስ /Zachariah:

1.                  የኢዮርብዓ ልጅ፥ “በይሁዳ ንጉሥ በዓዛርያስ በሠላሳ ስምንተኛው ዓመት የኢዮርብዓም ልጅ ዘካርያስ በእስራኤል ላይ በሰማርያ ስድስት ወር ነገሠ።” (2 ነገ 15:8)

2.                  የይሁዳ ንጉሥ የአካዝ ልጅ የሕዝቅያስ የእናቱ አባት፥ (2 ነገ 18:2)

II.                        ዘካርያስ /Zacharias:

1.                  የመጥምቁ የዮሐንስ አባት፥ “በይሁዳ ንጉሥ በሄሮድስ ዘመን ከአብያ ክፍል የሆነ ዘካርያስ የሚባል አንድ ካህን ነበረ፤ ሚስቱም ከአሮን ልጆች ነበረች፥ ስምዋም ኤልሳቤጥ ነበረ።” (ሉቃ 1:5)

2.                  ጌታ በቤተ መቅደስና  በመሠዊያው መካከል ስለመገደሉ የጠቀሰው፣ የራክዩ ልጅ፥ (ማቴ 23:35)

III.                        ዘካርያስ /Zechariah:

1.                  የአዶ ልጅ፣ ነብዩ ዘካርያስ፥ “ነቢያቱም ሐጌና የአዶ ልጅ ዘካርያስ በይሁዳና በኢየሩሳሌም ለነበሩ አይሁድ በእስራኤል አምላክ ስም ትንቢት ተናገሩላቸው” (ዕዝ 5:1)

2.                  የሮቤል ልጆች አለቃ፥ (1 ዜና 5:7፣8)

3.                  የመገናኛው ድንኳን ደጅ በረኛ የነበረ፥ የሜሱላም ልጅ፥ (1 ዜና 9:21)

4.                  የቃል ኪዳኑን ከተከተሉ፣ ከሁለተኛው ተራ የሆነ፥ በመሰንቆ ምሥጢር ነገር ያዜሙ ከነበር፥ (1 ዜና 15:20-24)

5.                  የይሺያ ልጅ፥ “ከይሺያ ልጆች ዘካርያስ የሜራሪ ልጆች …” (1 ዜና 24:25፣26)

6.                  በይሁዳ ንጉሥ በኢዮአስ ዘመን የነበረ የካህኑ የዮዳሄ ልጅ፥ (2 ዜና24:20)፣  ጌታ ኢየሱስ የጠቀሰው ይህን ዘካርያስ ነው፥  (ማቴ 23:35)

7.                  በንጉሥ ኢዮስያስ ዘመን የነበረ፥ የሌዊያዊው የቀዓት ልጅ፥  (2 ዜና 34:12)

8.                  በዕዝራ ዘመን ከምርኮ ከተመለሱ፥ የፋሮስ ልጅ፥ (ዕዝ 8:3)

9.                  ንጉሥ ዳዊትን ያገለግሉ ከነበር ሹማምንት በምናሴ ነገድ ክፍል አለቃ የነበረ፥ (2 ዜና 17:7)፣ (1 ዜና 27:21)
